21 July, 2004 * 9:12 pm Had a good time in Portland. We liked the city very much, and it was really fun seeing my parents and meeting their new car. We named it Big Red (and by "we" I mean me). It's a good Honda, and it's still holding on to that new car smell. The weather in Portland was nice, albeit weirdly humid (for Portland, that is), but our hotel was a block from the Willamette river, and there always seemed to be a nice breeze, so the unexplained humidity didn't bug all that much. We met with two realtors while we were there -- one of whom was such an IDIOT I felt the need to capitalize it. The next realtor was a good ol' boy who brought his wife along, and we liked them a lot. They showed us about ten different houses in our price range, and Non and I agreed that if we were at the buying stage, there were three of the ten houses we'd consider putting a bid on. And Portland's downtown is, so far, THE BEST city downtown I've ever been to. And they have really excellent public transportation, and within the downtown area it's FREE. I mean, come on. Can you get much better than that? We visited the Saturday Market while we were there, which is sort of like an art and wine festival with vendors peddling their wares, but the difference between this Saturday Market and the Saturday Market that our home town of Eugene, Oregon has is that Portland's Saturday Market wasn't selling crap. The vendors were all pretty damn impressive. We bought a few small paintings from an artist we both really dug, and we got a card from this gal who makes gorgeous tiled artwork and frames. There was also this guy who made sculptures out of scrap metal. Non was close to buying a replica of a bulldog made out of the skeletons of football helmets. All in all, a great trip. As I was tootling around online, I found what I've christened "the best online purchase I've ever made." I wasn't planning on buying it, but how could I not?! It was a ringer t-shirt (for my Non) with a cowbell on it, with the caption, "I need more cowbell!" from, of course, the Saturday Night Live skit where Christopher Walken kept uttering that crazy phrase in his New York accent. "I need moah cowbell!" Brilliant. I'm telling you, that Hot Topic has some truly random shit. Jeanne likey.
